Double blind ultrafast pulse characterization by mixed frequency generation in a gold antenna
Ultrafast pulse characterization requires the analysis of correlation functions generated by frequency mixing of optical pulses in a nonlinear medium. In this work, we use a gold optical nanoantenna to generate simultaneously Four Wave Mixing and Sum Frequency Generation across the tuning range of a Ti: Sapphire and Optical Parametric Oscillator (OPO) system. Since metal nanoparticles create remarkably strong nonlinear responses for their size without the need for phase matching, this allows us to simultaneously characterize the unknown OPO pulse and its pump pulse using a single spectrogram. The nonlinear mixing is efficient enough to retrieve pulses with energies in the picojoule range
Electron-Spin Excitation Coupling in an Electron Doped Copper Oxide Superconductor
High-temperature (high-Tc) superconductivity in the copper oxides arises from
electron or hole doping of their antiferromagnetic (AF) insulating parent
compounds. The evolution of the AF phase with doping and its spatial
coexistence with superconductivity are governed by the nature of charge and
spin correlations and provide clues to the mechanism of high-Tc
superconductivity. Here we use a combined neutron scattering and scanning
tunneling spectroscopy (STS) to study the Tc evolution of electron-doped
superconducting Pr0.88LaCe0.12CuO4-delta obtained through the oxygen annealing
process. We find that spin excitations detected by neutron scattering have two
distinct modes that evolve with Tc in a remarkably similar fashion to the
electron tunneling modes in STS. These results demonstrate that
antiferromagnetism and superconductivity compete locally and coexist spatially
on nanometer length scales, and the dominant electron-boson coupling at low

Acute oral toxicity and phytochemical study of "Diabenorme" and "Thuquinone" used to treat diabetes
The aim of the study was conducted to search for phytochemicals and evaluate the acute oral toxicity in mice for aqueous extracts of "Diabenorme" and "Thuquinone" used in the treatment of diabetes. "Diabenorme" is a combination of two medicinal plants: Persea americana (Lauraceae) and Anacardium occidentale (Anacardiaceae) while "Thuquinone" is composed of Pycnanthus angolensis (Myristicaceae). Phytochemical analysis was done using standard methods and acute toxicity test (OCDE 423) was performed by a fixed dose procedure consist in administration of three doses of 300, 2000 and 5000 mg/kg body weight of "Diabenorme" and "Thuquinone". Phytochemical analysis showed that the different drugs contained polyphenols, flavonoids, catechin tannins, alkaloids and saponins. Concerning acute toxicity test, no sign of toxicity and mortality were observed during the experiment after limit test of 5000 mg/kg. Thus, there were no significant differences (Fischer test, P ˃ 0.05) in the body weights between the control and treated animals. These results show that the aqueous extracts of "Diabenorme" and "Thuquinone" are potentially safe for oral consumption at acute administration up to dose of 5000 mg/kg. Search for K_S K_L in psi'' decays
K_S K_L from psi'' decays is searched for using the psi'' data collected by
BESII at BEPC, the upper limit of the branching fraction is determined to be
B(psi''--> K_S K_L) < 2.1\times 10^{-4} at 90% C. L. The measurement is
compared with the prediction of the S- and D-wave mixing model of the
charmonia, based on the measurements of the branching fractions of J/psi-->K_S

Study of psi(2S) decays to X J/psi
Using J/psi -> mu^+ mu^- decays from a sample of approximately 4 million
psi(2S) events collected with the BESI detector, the branching fractions of
psi(2S) -> eta J/psi, pi^0 pi^0 J/psi, and anything J/psi normalized to that of
psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi are measured. The results are B(psi(2S) -> eta
J/psi)/B(psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi) = 0.098 \pm 0.005 \pm 0.010, B(psi(2S) ->
pi^0 pi^0 J/psi)/B(psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi) = 0.570 \pm 0.009 \pm 0.026, and
B(psi(2S) -> anything J/psi)/B(psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi) = 1.867 \pm 0.026

Isolation of Myogenic Stem Cells from Cultures of Cryopreserved Human Skeletal Muscle
We demonstrate that subpopulations of adult human skeletal muscle-derived stem cells, myogenic endothelial cells (MECs), and perivascular stem cells (PSCs) can be simultaneously purified by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) from cryopreserved human primary skeletal muscle cell cultures (cryo-hPSMCs). For FACS isolation, we utilized a combination of cell lineage markers: the myogenic cell marker CD56, the endothelial cell marker UEA-1 receptor (UEA-1R), and the perivascular cell marker CD146. MECs expressing all three cell lineage markers (CD56+UEA-1R+CD146+/CD45+) and PSCs expressing only CD146 (CD146+/CD45+CD56+UEA-1R+) were isolated by FACS. To evaluate their myogenic capacities, the sorted cells, with and without expansion in culture, were transplanted into the cardiotoxin-injured skeletal muscles of immunodeficient mice. The purified MECs exhibited the highest regenerative capacity in the injured mouse muscles among all cell fractions tested, while PSCs remained superior to myoblasts and the unpurified primary skeletal muscle cells. Our findings show that both MECs and PSCs retain their high myogenic potentials after in vitro expansion, cryopreservation, and FACS sorting. The current study demonstrates that myogenic stem cells are prospectively isolatable from long-term cryopreserved primary skeletal muscle cell cultures. We emphasize the potential application of this new approach to extract therapeutic stem cells from human muscle cells cryogenically banked for clinical purposes. © 2012 Cognizant Comm. Corp
First Measurements of eta_c Decaying into K^+K^-2(pi^+pi^-) and 3(pi^+pi^-)
The decays of eta_c to K^+K^-2(pi^+pi^-) and 3(pi^+pi^-) are observed for the
first time using a sample of 5.8X10^7 J/\psi events collected by the BESII
detector. The product branching fractions are determined to be B(J/\psi-->gamma
eta_c)*B(eta_c-->K^+K^-pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^-)=(1.21+-0.32+-
0.23)X10^{-4}, and (J/\psi-->gamma eta_c)*
B(eta_c-->pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^-)= (2.59+-0.32+-0.48)X10^{-4}. The upper
limit for eta_c-->phi pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^- is also obtained as B(J/\psi-->gamma
eta_c)*B(eta_c--> phi pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^-)< 6.03 X10^{-5} at the 90% confidence

Measurement of the Branching Fraction of J/psi --> pi+ pi- pi0
Using 58 million J/psi and 14 million psi' decays obtained by the BESII
experiment, the branching fraction of J/psi --> pi+ pi- pi0 is determined. The
result is (2.10+/-0.12)X10^{-2}, which is significantly higher than previous
